Eight-car pile-up on black ice

On Behalf of Rosenberg, Eisenberg & Associates, LLC | January 5, 2023 | Auto Accidents

Within the Chicago Metropolitan area, it’s known that with colder weather comes icy and slippery road conditions that have led to dozens of auto accidents resulting in damaged cars or fatalities. You can never predict the weather or circumstances; we remind you to avoid unnecessary travel in unsafe conditions. If you must drive, please take precautions for poor road conditions.

A recent news report noted an 8-car pile-up near Route 20 and McLean Blvd in Elgin (Chicago area) as “weather conditions were the main factor.” Fortunately, there were only minor injuries reported. A series of snowstorms have submerged the area, creating black ice in surrounding regions. In Chicago, the Department of Streets and Sanitation has deployed several salt trucks in response to the continued weather conditions.

If you have to drive in poor winter weather conditions, please remember to:

  • Actively check the weather forecast, especially for long-distance drives

  • Keep a cold-weather survival kit during winter months that include blankets, windshield wiper, flashlight, food, shovel, first aid kit, batteries, etc.

  • Make sure to have non-perishable snacks and waters

  • Keep an ice scraper and brush in your car.

  • Keep cold weather gear in your car; extra hats, gloves, jackets, etc.

  • Ensure your cell phone is charged, and keep charging cables in your car.
