Nothing can be more worrisome than walking into a nursing home to find your loved one with unexplained bruising or lacerations. Even more troubling is when your loved one tells you that he or she has been physically or sexually assaulted in the nursing home.

Physical and sexual abuse is a serious problem in nursing homes. Residents are often vulnerable, leaving them open to physical and sexual abuse by other residents and staff.

No amount of physical or sexual abuse is OK. If you find unexplained bruises on your loved one, it is important to call an attorney right away. Things to watch for include:

• Unexplained bruising

• Unexplained changes in behavior

• Your loved one telling you that something has happened to him or her, even if he or she has dementia or other cognitive diseases
